Sweet Spot Classics Kicks Off Upper Deck’s Decoy Program

(2/21/02)
One of last year’s popular baseball products makes a triumphant return with even better content and a tribute to the game’s greatest players. 2002 Upper Deck Sweet Spot Classics, a hybrid of last year’s popular Sweet Spot release, launches the week of Feb. 24 and features retired players as well as the unique Sweet Spot Signature insert card. The four-card packs will have a suggested retail price of $9.99. Game-jersey cards will be inserted 1:8 packs, while autograph cards will fall into 1:24 packs. But it might be the card found in every pack that will garner the most attention.

Sweet Spot Classics launches a one-per-pack, decoy card insert that battles the problem of pack searching. The cards, about the thickness of four regular cards, will promote upperdeckstore.com and also serve as discount coupons.

"One of the most vocal topics last year from collectors, dealers and distributors was the problem of pack searching," says Tim Muret, Upper Deck’s VP of Marketing. "We heard these cries loud and clear and feel we have come up with a solution that combats the problem, promotes our online store and benefits collectors with a unique savings program."

Each pack contains a decoy and two of those packs per box will have a special decoy card similar to Upper Deck e-Cards. These cards have a scratch off box containing a pin number that can be entered into the Upper Deck website. Once evolved, the decoy e-Card can save customers up to 50% on online store merchandise or as much as $15 on a Personalized Trading Card purchase.

The new decoy cards will appear in all of Upper Deck’s 2002 premium and super premium brands. Other than Sweet Spot, collectors will find them in Sweet Shot Basketball and Top Shelf Hockey. The SPx and SP Authentic brands will include decoy’s across all sports.
